Network+ Performance Based Questions
Network+ performance based questions are one of the biggest changes that have been occurring with CompTIA certification exams. They are in current 800 series A+ exams, the Network+ exam, and the Security+ exam. Instead of just multiple choice questions, you can expect to see a mixture of different types of questions.
An earlier blog titled CompTIA Performance Based Testing talks about some of the changes in more depth but here’s just a few tidbits on the types of questions you might run across on the Network+ exam. Overall, it’s good news.
You might see between two and ten of these types of questions and they are less about doing something than actively showing you have the knowledge.

Identify
As an example, objective 3.2 “Categorize standard connector types based on network media” expects you to be able to identify different types of connectors. You should be familiar with each of the media listed. One way to make sure you’re prepared is to view pictures of the different types of media. You can easily do so with Google images to remind yourself.

Similarly, you might be required to identify a tool based on a specific requirement. For example, objective 4.2 “Given a scenario, use appropriate hardware tools to troubleshoot connectivity issues” expects you to know the purpose of many common tools. If you need to identify a tool by sight that can identify a short or open, what tool would you use?
A past post titled Network+ Hardware Tools includes basic explanations of these tools along with links to images of them.

Summary
If you’re planning on taking the Network+ exam soon, make sure you can identify many of the different connectors and tools by sight so that you can answer some of the Network+ performance based questions correctly. Good luck.
Hey Darril, I purchased your Network+ online practice exams. I was wondering if you have some practice simulation material for the new N10-0006?
Hi Kevin. Sorry, but not yet. Perhaps within a couple of months.
Hi Darril,
I passed my Network+ as I stated before in a previous post. I am actually going for my CCENT instead of MCSA Windows 7 first. I was wondering if you had an advice on the CCENT certification. What is the difference between Network+ and CCENT besides the fact that they are from two different companies.
Thanks
Allen
Congrats again on the Network+ pass, Allen. I don’t have the CCENT so I’m not the best source of information for it. You will find that there is a lot of crossover between the two though but CCENT is generally more difficult. As part of the CCNA, it’s focused on Cisco products. I don’t remember which exams require which knowledge, but overall when pursuing the CCNA, you need to get your hands on the products to execute commands so that you understand them and also know subnetting inside and out. Hope this helps.
Hi Sherri,
Congratulations on the pass and thanks for the kind words on the Security+ book.
The goal is to create a Get Certified Get Ahead Network+ book, but I’ve had several delays. Several chapters and a full bank of practice test questions are available in Kindle format but that’s all that is available at the moment. You don’t need to have a Kindle to read these. Amazon has created a wealth of free apps that allow you to read Kindle books on almost any platform (PCs, MACs, iPads and other tablets, smartphones, and more).
You can get them here: http://ow.ly/q8LAY
Good luck.
Hello Mr. Gibson,
I just wanted to say that I read your book on Security+ Get Certified Get Ahead and I passed my exam. Your book was so easy to read and understand. I would like to obtain your book on Network+. However, the only books I can find are only offered in Kindle form. Do you have a book called Network+ Get Certified Get Ahead? Also, can I find your different topics on Networking in .PDF or word format?
Congratulations on the pass. Good luck with the MCSA Windows 7 cert.
Hi Darril,
I used your book to pass my Security Plus exam and I used this blog to help me with questions that could come up on the Network + Exam. Happy to say that I passed my exam today 762/900. I started out with about 3 or 4 simulations questions. They weren’t extremely different but took some thinking. One of the simulations I had to configure wireless settings for an internal wireless network for a companies building. I had to choose the encryption method, and how strong the signal should be. Also, on another simulation, there were a group of switches and they said they weren’t working and you had to enable or disable ports. The last one I remember had to do with the t568A&B wiring standards. It gave you a diagram of the output from a cable tester and asked if there was anything wrong with the cables. I think mine was shorted and I said yes. When I said yes, they asked me to put the cables in the correct order using T568A standards. After that, I was left with 80 questions. Next, I plan to go for my MCSA Windows 7.
