Flashcards give you a quick reminder and review of important topics.

Each flashcard includes a short question and when you tap the device, you’ll see the answer.

All of the practice test questions include full explanations so that you’ll know why the correct answers are correct, and why the incorrect answers are incorrect. This way no matter how CompTIA words the questions, you’ll be able to answer them correctly. When you go through the practice test questions, you’ll be able to see the correct answer and explanation immediately after selecting your answer.LearnZapp ScreenShot Question
LearnZapp ScreenShot MockThe timed mock tests give you random questions from all the domains.

You’ll be able to select the answer, but you won’t see the correct answer and explanation until you finish the mock test.

When you finish the test, you’ll see your score, how many questions you answered correctly, and how many you answered incorrectly.

You can then review the test to see the correct answers and explanations.

Earn CompTIA CEUs

Many people have recently asked me about earning continuing education units (CEUs) and how they can earn them.

One simple way if you can write is to write blog posts. You can earn 1 CEU for each blog post. (You can earn a total of eight CEUs for A+, 12 CEUs for Network+, 16 CEUs for Security+, and 20 CEUs for CASP by writing blog posts.)

Guest Blogger

If you don’t want to set up a full blog, you can write blogs as a guest blogger on the Get Certified Get Ahead blog site.

The post should be a minimum of 1,000 words for CEUs (CompTIAs requirement, not mine.) You can split it into two related 500 word posts if that works better for you.

If you’re interested, identify a topic you want to write on and propose it. If it ties into a specific objective, list the objective. If you’re not sure of a topic, I suggest you look at the objectives for the certification you’re trying to earn CEs on, and pick a topic that interests you.

We can include a footer at the bottom of the post with information about you so that it’s clear that you wrote it.

If you’re interested, send me a note with the topic you’d like to write about.

Combined with work experience, you might be able to earn most of your CEUs just by writing occasional blog posts. (You can earn three CEUs a year for properly documented work experience for a total of nine CEUs for any CompTIA certification).

CEU Requirements

As a reminder, CompTIA has identified the following requirements for some of its certifications:

CertificationCEUs required for renewal
CompTIA A+20
CompTIA Network+30
CompTIA Security+50
CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP)75

You can find more information on the CompTIA requirements and acceptable activities here.

Many Professionals Require CEs

Some people are critical of CE programs but the truth is they are widespread.

Medical doctors are required to earn CEUs. If doctors earned their degrees 20 years ago but never updated their medical knowledge, they would be treating people with outdated knowledge. CEU requirements help ensure medical doctors stay up-to-date.

Similarly, the first A+ certification I earned in 1999 has little relevance when compared to current technology. If I never updated that knowledge, my usefulness in IT would be very limited. CEUs help verify that technology professionals stay up-to-date.

The CompTIA Trio

Many people purse the CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications, in that order. Each of these certifications build on each other and combined they provide a solid foundation of IT knowledge for a successful IT career. Of course, this isn’t a requirement, but if you do earn these certifications in this order, you’ll find that they can help you earn the required CEUs.

As an example, imagine you earn the A+ certification in January. If you never earned another certification, you would need to earn 20 CEUs within three years and pay the program fees. If you don’t, your A+ expires.

However, imagine you earn the Network+ certification in May. This automatically meets the requirements for the A+ and you no longer need to worry about earning your A+ CEUs or paying your A+ CE fees. Instead, you need to earn the 30 CEUs for Network+ (and pay the program fees) within three years of the May certification.

Beware of questions that do not include explanations - many people have identified errors in these and even when there aren't errors, these types of questions encourage you to memorize answers instead of understanding the underlying concepts.* Don't you hate those little asterisks. Normally they mean "forget what you just read, it's not really true." Not so here though. The bank starts with 293 multiple choice practice test questions, but I'm still adding to them. There will be more.** CompTIA identified five domains of objectives for the CompTIA Network+ exam. They are:
  • 1.0 Networking Architecture
  • 2.0 Network Operations
  • 3.0 Network Security
  • 4.0 Troubleshooting
  • 5.0 Industry Standards, Practices, and Network Theory

If you complete the CompTIA Trio and get the Security+ certification in July, you no longer need to worry about earning your Network+ CEUs or paying your Network+ CE fees. Instead, you need to earn the 50 CEUs for Security+ (and pay the program fees) within three years of the July certification.

Beyond the CompTIA Trio

If you stay in IT, you can continue to earn certifications beyond the CompTIA trio of A+, Network+, and Security+. As an example, you could earn the (ISC)2 SSCP certification or CISSP certification. This gives you the 50 CEUs you need to keep your A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications updated. A difference is that you will need to pay the program fees to register non-CompTIA certifications.

How To Enter the CEUs

You can enter all your CEUs (and pay the program fees) via your CE account. You can access it here. You use your CompTIA Candidate Career ID and a password. That page also has instructions on how to start if you’ve never logged in before, or you do not know r CompTIA Candidate Career ID.

Using the A+ Training Kit

Using the A+ Training Kit

I recently received an email from a reader asking how to use the CompTIA A+ Training Kit (Exam 220-801 and Exam 220-802) book. The two CompTIA A+ exams include pages and pages of objectives and the CompTIA A+ Training Kit (Exam 220-801 and Exam 220-802) book includes 26 chapters so it is a good question.

The book includes a CD with the following contents:

  • A fully functioning test engine with practice tests for the 220-801 and 220-802 exams. The engine includes study mode where you can immediately see the correct answer and explanation, and certification mode where the answers only show at the end of the test.
  • 196 realistic practice test questions for the 220-801 exam.
  • 200 realistic practice test questions for the 220-802 exam.
  • A fully searchable copy of the book in a PDF format.
  • A list of links to other content including multiple videos available on Microsoft sites and elsewhere.

What Type of Reader Are You?

While writing this book, I had three types of readers in mind. I expected each of these three readers would approach the book differently, but I also wanted to make sure it was useful to them.

1) Relatively New to Computers

If this is you, you can read the book from page 1 to the last page, mastering the concepts as you go.

Once you finish it, break open the CD and start doing practice test questions for the 220-801 exam. Each question has in-depth explanations and identifies the chapter where the concept is covered. At this point, you should ensure you know why the correct answers are correct, and why the incorrect answers are incorrect.

After passing the 220-801 exam, start doing the practice test questions for the 220-802 exam.

2) Very Familiar with Computers

If you’ve been working in an IT job for years but are taking the A+ exams to fulfill an employer requirement, you can use this method. Look at the 220-801 objectives to see what is clear and what isn’t. For any concepts that aren’t clear, use the objective map at the very beginning of the book, the table of contents, and the index to identify where the concepts are covered. You can also break open the CD and use the searchable PDF to find topics.

Next, start doing practice test questions for the 220-801 exam. The goal isn’t to get all the questions correct. The goal is to ensure you understand the concepts. Ideally, you should be able to look at any question and know why the correct answers are correct, and why the incorrect answers are incorrect. This way, no matter how CompTIA words the questions, you’ll be able to answer them correctly.

Finish the 220-801 exam and repeat this process with the 220-802 objectives.

3) Using the Book as a Secondary Source

It is common to use more than one source to study for any certification exam. If a topic isn’t clear, you can use the second book to get another author’s perspective. Use the objective map, the table of contents, the index, and the searchable PDF to identify where any topic is covered.

You can also use the practice test questions on the CD to help you prepare.

How is the A+ Training Kit Organized?

When I first started planning the book, my primary goal was to present the material in a logical order so that they made sense to just about any reader. Of course, I covered all the objectives, but for this book I didn’t follow the order of the objectives. Topics in Domain 1 covered BIOS, motherboards, RAM, CPUs, chipsets, power, fans, front panel connectors, bus speeds, expansion cards, storage devices, cooling methods, interfaces, and custom configurations.

Instead, I outlined four major sections of the based on the A+ objectives for both exams. My section labels were helpful to me as I created the chapters and organized the book, but the section labels were cut somewhere in the editing process. Here are the four sections:

A+ Training Kit Section 1 – Hardware

The first ten chapters are focused on hardware components and troubleshooting them. These topics are heavily tested in the 220-801 exam, and advanced concepts are tested in the 220-802 exam. For example, the Troubleshooting domain in the 220-802 exam comprises 36% of the exam and expects you to know how to troubleshoot almost all of the hardware covered in the 220-801 exam.

  • Chapter 1 Introduction to Computers
  • Chapter 2 Understanding Motherboards and BIOS
  • Chapter 3 Understanding RA M and CPUs
  • Chapter 4 Comparing Storage Devices
  • Chapter 5 Exploring Peripherals and Expansion Cards
  • Chapter 6 Exploring Video and Display Devices
  • Chapter 7 Exploring Printers
  • Chapter 8 Working with Laptops
  • Chapter 9 Understanding Mobile Devices
  • Chapter 10 Working with Customers

A+ Training Kit Section 2 – Operating Systems

The next seven chapters focuses on Windows operating system topics. The 220-802 exam includes the Operating Systems domain which is 33% of the exam.

  • Chapter 11 Introducing Windows Operating Systems
  • Chapter 12 Installing and Updating Windows Operating Systems
  • Chapter 13 Using Windows Operating Systems
  • Chapter 14 Using the Command Prompt
  • Chapter 15 Configuring Windows Operating Systems
  • Chapter 16 Understanding Disks and File Systems
  • Chapter 17 Troubleshooting Windows Operating Systems

A+ Training Kit Section 3 – Networking

Section 3 includes seven chapters on networking topics. Networking is 27 percent of the 220-801 exam. These topics are also interspersed in various objectives in the 220-802 exam.

  • Chapter 18 Introducing Networking Components
  • Chapter 19 Exploring Cables and Connectivity
  • Chapter 20 Understanding Protocols
  • Chapter 21 Comparing IPv4 and IPv6
  • Chapter 22 Network Security Devices
  • Chapter 23 Exploring Wireless Networking
  • Chapter 24 Connecting and Troubleshooting a Network

A+ Training Kit Section 4 – Security

The last section includes two chapters on security. The 220-802 has a heavy focus on security. The security domain is 22 percent of that exam, and security topics are sprinkled throughout the objectives.

  • Chapter 25 Understanding IT Security
  • Chapter 26 Recognizing Malware and Other Threats

Practice Test Questions for your Mobile Device

If desired, you can also complement the A+Training Kit with additional practice test questions. Learnzapp has published some great apps for most mobile devices to help people study practice test questions while on the go. Search the app store with “Learnzapp A+”.

This book is getting great reviews on Amazon. Here are some comments.

Was the only resource I needed

If you have a background in PC hardware and already know your way around and computer, then this should be all you really need to be able to pass the exams.

From the arrival of the book, to taking the tests took only 3 weeks until I felt I was prepared enough. Really, a good piece of reference material to pick up and keep.

Great Tool for Certification or Refresher

I’ve worked as a computer technician for about eight years, getting my A+ certification just prior to being hired and re-certifying as part of a company-wide training curriculum a couple years later. When I’m not studying for something new, I like to pick up a study guide for one of the basic certifications as a refresher. Mike Meyers got me through my actual certifications and up until now he has been, without question, my favorite author on the subject. Darril Gibson will be my first choice from now on.

Terrific and Exhaustively Complete Test Prep

If you’re going to prep for this test, I cannot imagine a better resource than this book.

Personally, I found the following topics very well-handled: Understanding the File Systems, Expansion Cards and Peripherals, and Configuring Windows.

Excellent resource for CompTIA A+

This book is really pleasant to read and learn from. At first I took cbtnuggets.com videos for CompTIA A+ and I am really happy I did it. 95% of the info you need its there but sometimes you need some more specific info on particular subjects like how basses work, clock speeds etc. This book can fill this gap and at the same time it will be really enjoyable to read because of the clear and concise writing approach that the author uses. One more advantage is that it covers all new topics CompTIA A+ has included like Mobile Devices Chapter.

A+ Rapid Review

A+ Rapid Review Released

If you’re preparing for the A+ exam, you might like to know that the new A+ Rapid Review book has been released. This book is a a perfect supplement to one of the larger A+ books such as the CompTIA A+ Training Kit (Exam 220-801 and Exam 220-802).

At only 410 pages, the A+ Rapid Review book is much smaller than the 1024 pages of the A+ Training Kit and it doesn’t go into as much depth in the A+ topics. However, the A+ Rapid Review book is invaluable in helping you understand what you know and what you don’t know prior to walking into the testing center.

You Can Pass A+ - Get Certified Get Ahead

The A+ Rapid Review book covers all of the objectives for the A+ exam and reinforces the key concepts. It includes nine chapters matched to the nine domains in the 220-801 and 220-802 exams.

Exam 220-801

  • Chapter 1 PC Hardware
  • Chapter 2 Networking
  • Chapter 3 Laptops
  • Chapter 4 Printers
  • Chapter 5 Operational Procedures

Exam 220-802

  • Chapter 6 Operating Systems
  • Chapter 7 Security
  • Chapter 8 Mobile Devices
  • Chapter 9 Troubleshooting

As an example of what you’ll see in the A+ Rapid Review book, here’s an excerpt from Chapter 8 Mobile devices.

Chapter 8 Mobile devices

The Mobile Devices domain covers approximately 9 percent of the A+ 220-802 exam. It includes various mobile devices that are commonly used today, such as smartphones and tablets. As a PC technician, you need to be aware of the different types of operating systems used by these devices, how they can connect to a wireless network and the Internet, methods used to secure them, and how they can be synchronized. You also need to be aware of the hardware differences between tablets and laptops, such as what can be serviced or upgraded on each.

This chapter covers the following objectives:

  • Objective 3.1: Explain the basic features of mobile operating systems
  • Objective 3.2: Establish basic network connectivity and configure email
  • Objective 3.3: Compare and contrast methods for securing mobile devices
  • Objective 3.4: Compare and contrast hardware differences in regards to tablets and laptops
  • Objective 3.5: Execute and configure mobile device synchronization

Objective 3.1: Explain the basic features of mobile operating systems

The CompTIA exam focuses on the Android and iOS operating systems used on many mobile devices. You need to know which operating system is used on which devices, and where users can purchase apps for these devices. This objective specifically mentions the accelerometer and gyroscope used in many devices and how they are used by different apps. Touch devices can sometimes require screen calibration, and you should understand what this is and when it is needed. Last, you need to know what is meant by terms global positioning system (GPS) and geotracking, and how they can be used with location services.

Exam need to know…

  • Android vs. iOS
For example: Which operating system is open source? Where can apps be purchased for devices using the iOS operating system?
  • Screen orientation and calibration
For example: What determines whether a tablet is moving and how quick it is moving? What hardware is required to maintain screen orientation?
  • GPS and geotracking
For example: What is geotracking? What is a benefit of location services?

Android vs. iOS

Mobile devices created and sold by Apple use the iOS operating system. Many other mobile devices use the Android operating system, which is closely associated with Google.

NOTE While the Windows 8 phone and Windows 8 tablets are in use, they aren’t currently included in the objectives for the CompTIA exams.

True or false? The Android operating system is an open source operating system.

Answer: True. The Android operating system is a Linux-based operating system, which is open source.

Many different hardware companies use the Android operating system on devices they create and sell. They don’t have to pay Google or anyone else to use the operating system. In contrast, only Apple makes hardware devices using the iOS operating system. No other company is authorized to use it on non-Apple devices. The difference between open source and closed source software is defined as follows:

  • Open source software is freely available to anyone. Developers can modify and redistribute the code without paying anyone else for the license to use it.
  • Closed source software (also called vendor-specific software) is proprietary to a company and not available without a license to use it.

EXAM TIP Ensure that you know the difference between open source and closed source software. Android is open source software, and iOS is closed source or vendor-specific software.

True or false? You can purchase iOS-based applications only from Apple’s App Store.

Answer: True. Apple tightly controls all software used on Apple devices, and this software can be purchased only from Apple’s App Store.

A benefit of the App Store is that the applications are free from viruses. Apple screens all applications before making them available for purchase. If a virus is discovered, it can be immediately removed from the store. Additionally, if a developer does upload a virus, Apple knows the developer’s identity and can take immediate action against the developer.

Android-based apps are available through Google Play (previously called Android Marketplace), and Google controls the apps available here. However, there are additional locations where users can purchase Android apps. For example, Amazon includes a section where you can buy Android-based apps.

EXAM TIP Apps for Apple devices are purchased only through the Apple App store. Users can access the App store directly from any Apple device. Apps for Android-based systems are available through Google Play primarily, but they can also be purchased through other sources.

MORE INFO You can visit the Google Play site here: https://play.google.com/store. Microsoft also has a store where apps can be purchased for mobile devices, which you can view here: http://www.windowsstore.com/.

Screen orientation and calibration

Mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones can automatically sense their orientation. They can modify the display for the user, such as change from portrait mode to landscape mode based on how the user is holding the display.

True or false? Tablets use an accelerometer and a gyroscope to determine the position of the device.

Answer: True. Many devices have a single chip with an accelerometer and a gyroscope used to determine the position of the device.

The accelerometer/gyroscope chip sends an output to the operating system and applications. If the feature is enabled in the operating system and supported by the app, the display is automatically adjusted when the user changes the orientation of the device. For example, a user can be reading an eBook in an app using portrait mode, with the device held so that the height is greater than the width. If the user repositions the device so that the width is greater than the height, the device automatically switches to landscape mode.

Optionally, you can disable the feature so that the display remains constant no matter how the device is held. For example, you can enable Rotation Lock on an iPad to lock the display.

True or false? An accelerometer can measure how fast a tablet is moving in a given direction.

Answer: True. The accelerometer measures velocity or speed of the tablet in a given direction. This is often used with games on tablet devices.

EXAM TIP Accelerometers and gyroscopes are embedded into mobile devices to determine the device’s position. The gyroscope detects how the user is holding the device so that the screen orientation can automatically be adjusted to portrait or landscape mode. The accelerometer detects when the device is moved and how fast it is moving, a feature that is used in some games and apps.

True or false? If the device cannot determine its position, you can sometimes recalibrate it by moving the entire device in a figure 8 pattern.

Answer: True. In some cases, the device can no longer determine its position. You can hold the device with both hands in front of you and move it in a figure 8 pattern to recalibrate it.

EXAM TIP Not all mobile devices include a gyroscope. If you find that a device is not automatically switching between landscape and portrait mode, it could be because the device doesn’t have a gyroscope or because the feature is disabled.

Can you answer these questions?

You can find the answers to these questions at the end of this chapter.

1. Is the Android operating system closed source or open source?

2. Where are apps for devices running iOS purchased?

3. What is the purpose of the gyroscope and accelerometer in a mobile device?
