Security+ Exam Price Increased

Did you hear that CompTIA recently increased the price for the Security+ exam to $320 from $302. It’s an increase of only about six percent, so it isn’t that big in the scheme of things. Still if you weren’t prepared for it, it might come as a surprise.

New Security+ Exam

Did you hear about the new Security+ (SY0-501) exam?

New Security+ Exam

Someone’s talking about it because I’ve recently received several queries asking me about it.

Yes, it’s true that CompTIA updates their exams every three years. And yes it’s reasonable to expect that they’ll update the Security+ exam this year.

When CompTIA updates their exams, it often causes anxiety with many people. They wonder how they should respond. And many of them send their queries to me.

Here’s a list of some of the questions I’ve received recently, and some of the questions I anticipate based on past transitions to new exams.

Q. Did CompTIA release objectives for the SY0-501 exam to the public?

A. No. At least not as I write this. Check the source here.

If you see a change before I do, please let me know and I’ll update the page.

Q. When will CompTIA release objectives for the SY0-501 exam?

A. Only CompTIA knows. When they do release the SY0-501 objectives, you’ll be able to access them on their Security+ page.

Q. Will the SY0-501 exam be live the same day the objectives are released?

A. That is highly unlikely. In the past CompTIA has released the objectives to the public, and then the exam has gone live a few months later.

Note that they typically update the exam every three years. The launch date for the previous version was in May, 2014. It’s reasonable to expect the next version of the exam will be in 2017.

Q. When the SY0-501 exam goes live, can I still take the SY0-401 exam?

A. Yes. In the past, CompTIA has had an overlap period of several months. For example, if the SY0-501 exam goes live in October 2017, you will probably be able to still take the SY0-401 exam at least until New Year’s Eve in 2017.

Update: The SY0-501 exam will launch in October 2017. You will be able to still take the SY0-401 exam until July 2018.

Q. Should I wait for the SY0-501 exam?

A. If you want to delay your career, then by all means, wait.

A better approach is Carpe Certum! Seize the cert today.

If you have a need or desire to earn the Security+ certification, then study for and take the exam that is available now.

Get Certified Get Ahead

Q. Will the SY0-501 objectives be different than the SY0-401 objectives.

A. Absolutely. CompTIA doesn’t release the same objectives and call them new.

Q. Are your materials for the SY0-401 exam good for the SY0-501 exam?

A. While there is likely to be some crossover between the objectives, it is best to use a source for the exam that you plan to take.

In other words, if you plan to take the SY0-401 exam, use materials targeted for the SY0-401 exam.

If you plan to take the SY0-501 exam, use materials targeted for the SY0-501 exam.

Q. When will you have materials available for the SY0-501 exam.

A. Stay tuned. I fully expect to have materials available for the SY0-501 exam by the time the exam goes live.

CompTIA Security+ Study Guide (SY0-401)

The 401 Version of the Study Guide is Now Available

SY0-401 Study GuideThe CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-401 Study Guide is an update to the top-selling SY0-201 and SY0-301 study guides, which have helped thousands of readers pass the exam the first time they took it.

CompTIA Authorized Quality Content (CAQC)After a comprehensive review by ProCert Labs, the SY0-401 version has been certified as CompTIA Approved Quality Content (CAQC) and covers every aspect of the SY0-401 exam.

It includes the same elements readers raved about in the previous two versions.

Each of the eleven chapters presents topics in an easy to understand manner and includes real-world examples of security principles in action.

You’ll understand the important and relevant security topics for the Security+ exam, without being overloaded with unnecessary details. Additionally, each chapter includes a comprehensive review section to help you focus on what’s important.

Over 400 realistic practice test questions with in-depth explanations will help you test your comprehension and readiness for the exam. The book includes:

  • A 100 question pre-test
  • A 100 question post-test
  • Practice test questions at the end of every chapter.

Each practice test question includes a detailed explanation to help you understand the content and the reasoning behind the question. You’ll be ready to take and pass the exam the first time you take it.

If you plan to pursue any of the advanced security certifications, this guide will also help you lay a solid foundation of security knowledge. Learn this material, and you’ll be a step ahead for other exams. This SY0-401 study guide is for any IT or security professional interested in advancing in their field, and a must read for anyone striving to master the basics of IT security.

Kindle edition also available.

Q. Which exam should I take? (Sy0-401 or SY0-501).

A. It really doesn’t matter.

Hiring managers want to know that you have the certification. They rarely care what your score was (as long as you passed) and they rarely care what version you take. Security+ certified is Security+ certified.

Q. What is the benefit of taking the 501 exam as soon it comes out?

A. Bragging rights.

You can tell your peers that you took the newest version of the exam even though there were only minimal materials available to study from. This indicates that you truly understand the materials at a deeper level than beginners.

Some people might be very impressed. Others might wonder how you’re doing on the CCIE Security certification.

Summary

There are two simple messages in this post.

  1. Yes, you can expect a new Security+ exam to come out sometime this year.
  2. You don’t need to wait for it.

Help! I Failed Security+ 5 Times. How Can I Pass?

I recently received a message from someone that failed the Security+ exam. He was desperate to pass the Security+ exam after failing it five times. While it’s rare to hear from someone that has failed the exam so many times, I do occasionally hear from people that have failed.

The reasons are often the same.

Failed Security+ 5 Times Please Help

Here’s some of his message:

“Hello Mr. Gibson. … in my career field we need to be Security+ certified to move on. However I am on my fifth time re-testing and I feel like your study material isn’t helping as much as I want it and if I fail it a sixth time my dad will beat me savagely with a pair of jumper cables pls help

Failed Security+ Reply

Here’s a slightly edited version of my reply:

Hi xxx,

Did you look at this FAQ?
“Am I Ready?”

When people tell me that they’ve failed after using the materials on the site, I typically see one (or more) of the following issues:

  • They didn’t use all the materials
  • They didn’t get recommended scores of 90% on all the materials
  • They memorized the questions and answers

Look at your scores. What do you see?

  • Did you use all the materials?
  • Did you ultimately score higher than 90% on the quizzes?
  • Did you ultimately consistently score higher than 90% on the important quizzes?
  • Did you remind yourself why the correct answers were correct and why the incorrect answers were incorrect, or did you zip through the quizzes because you had memorized the questions and answers?

Five fails indicates that what you’ve been doing isn’t working. It’s time to try new things.

Try this. It is a formula that many people have used to successfully pass this test.

  • Use all the materials on the site.
  • Ensure you get passing scores for all the quizzes.
  • Ensure you get scores over 90% for the important quizzes.
  • Take the time to remind yourself why the correct answers are correct and why the incorrect answers are incorrect.

I’ve shared this same advice with others. Many told me that they took it, studied diligently, and passed the exam.

A couple of people later told me that they failed the exam again and lost their job (because their job was dependent on getting this certification). When I looked at their scores, I saw the same mistakes repeated.

I’m sure your Dad loves you and won’t really beat you “savagely with a pair of jumper cables.” However, you may find that your employer may not be so forgiving.

Fail Security+ or Pass Security+

I have no doubt that this person can pass the Security+ exam. However, I also know that it’s a tough exam. It will take time to go through all the materials, get scores over 90%, and gain an understanding of why the correct answers are correct and why the incorrect answers are incorrect.

Will he do it?

New Year’s Resolution

Did you create a New Year’s resolution?

Not this year, but last year.

If so, do you remember what it was? Most people don’t.

People create a New Year’s resolution with the best of intentions, but after a short time they forget it. Studies (such as the one done by Richard Wiseman) indicate that 88% of New Year’s resolutions fail.

Do You Want Success Instead?

One of the reasons why resolutions fail is because they are generic. For example, someone might set a resolution of improving their career by earning more certifications.

If you want to really implement a change in your life, you can do so by setting a goal instead of creating a resolution. At a minimum, an effective goal states two things:

  • What you want
  • When you want it

As an example, if you want to get a security certification, you can set this goal:

I will earn the Security+ certification by midnight March 1, 2017.

or

“I will earn the SSCP certification by midnight April 15th.”

or

Creating Effective Goals the SMART way

During my time in the Navy, trainers taught me that effective goals are SMART:

  • Specific. State exactly what you want. For example, instead of setting the goal: “I want a certification,” set a goal of “I want to earn the Security+ certification.”
  • Measurable. Goals are specific enough so that anyone, including you, can tell when you’ve achieved it. For example, after taking and passing the Security+ exam, you’ll have the certificate that you can show to anyone.
  • Achievable. If you’re working in an IT job or pursuing one and have relevant Networking knowledge, it is achievable to earn the Security+ certification, often in 30 days or less.
  • Realistic. The Security+ exam is difficult, but I hear from people almost every day telling me that they’ve passed the exam using the CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-401 Study Guide and/or study packages on this site. With the relevant networking knowledge and the right study materials, this exam is within reach of anyone willing to take the time to study.
  • Time-limited. A date identifies when you expect to achieve the goal. This helps spur you to action and enables you to evaluate your progress.

For example, this is a SMART goal:

I will earn the Security+ certification by midnight March 1, 2017.

You can modify your goal substituting any other certification such as CASP, CCNA, or anything else you like. Similarly, you can change the date to something that is achievable based on your current knowledge and the certification.

Cognitive Dissonance and Test Failure

“Can you buy a beer, bring it into class, and open it when I give you the signal?”

It was the psychology professor in a Master’s class that privately asked me that question. What else could I do other than say “sure.” He then coached me a little on what to say.

When he gave me the signal, I pulled the beer out of my book bag, popped the top, and acted like I was taking a sip. Some people complained, but the professor dismissed them saying, it was OK. They then attacked me, but I also acted like this was normal behavior, and besides “it’s only a beer.” A couple of my friends (who were not in on the demo) came to my defense, also saying “it’s only a beer.”

After about five minutes (just as one person was starting to walk out of the class), the professor let people know that I did it at his request. He was trying to demonstrate cognitive dissonance.

However, even after he explained that he set this up, people still had their heels dug in. They were still upset with me that I did it and seemed to dismiss the fact that I did it in response to a request from the professor.

Later, a couple of my friends admitted that they were unlikely to defend the action if someone else popped a beer in class. However, to reduce the conflict of unacceptable behavior by a friend, they rationalized the behavior and even defended it.

Cognitive Dissonance

Leon Festinger defined cognitive dissonance as the mental discomfort or stress that occurs from holding two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time. When people become uncomfortable due to an inconsistency, they typically try to reduce the discomfort. For example, they may:

  • Avoid situations that remind them of the inconsistency (even if that means walking out of a college class).
  • Dismiss facts that would otherwise increase the inconsistency (such as someone popping a beer at the professor’s request).

In other words, when people latch onto one belief, idea, or value, they tend to either avoid or reject anything that contradicts it.

A recent article in Scientific American reminded me of this concept.  I love the way it starts.

“Have you ever noticed that when you present people with facts that are contrary to their deepest held beliefs, they always change their minds? Me neither.”

The good news is that the concept helps answer a question that I’ve been struggling with over the past year.

Cognitive Dissonance and Security+

I hear from people almost every day telling me that they’ve passed the Security+ exam the first time they took it using the CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-401 Study Guide and/or online Security+ study packages.

Occasionally, I hear from people telling me that they used the online Security+ study resources, consistently scored over the 90% recommended score, but failed the exam. However, when I look at their online scores, it’s clear that they weren’t consistently scoring over the 90% recommended score, and often weren’t even getting passing scores on all the quizzes.

Even when I point this out, some people ignore the facts and instead complain about something external to themselves.

Why the inconsistency?

Why is that people ignore the facts that they can easily verify themselves?

Cognitive dissonance seems to be the clear answer. Some people have a high regard for their knowledge and skills. When they fail this exam, they ignore the recorded facts shown in their scores and blame CompTIA, the testing center, the study material, the Northern Lights, or something else.

Countering Cognitive Dissonance

What can I do if a test taker is experiencing cognitive dissonance? It turns out that I should just continue doing what I have been doing – stick to the facts.  When I get these types of emails, I typically include this in my response.

When people fail the exam after using the online resources, I typically see one or more of the following issues:

  • They haven’t used all of the online resources.
  • They aren’t getting passing scores (84% minimum, 90% recommended) on the critical quizzes.
  • Their quiz timings indicate they have memorized the questions and answers.

“You might like to check out this FAQ: Am I Ready?

Get Certified Get Ahead

I then point out the facts such as:

  • No scores for some of the critical quizzes.
  • Low scores for some of the critical quizzes.
  • Time taken to complete some quizzes (such as spending less  than 20 seconds per question).

Some people accept these facts, modify their study habits, and let me know later that they’ve passed the exam. Some people respond with a complaint and I never hear from them again.

I don’t feel so bad though. The MythBusters come up against this all the time. Even when they use science to bust myths such as the photos from the NASA moon landing are obviously fake, people still don’t accept the facts.
